    Commonly Asked Questions
Q What type of bottle does your acid come in?
    A
Bausch Scientific & Bausch Chemicals bottles are made from a patented polymer that has been specifically designed to contain concentrated nitric acid. Bausch bottles are DOT-approved under a special permit, are leak-proof, break-proof, and are entirely safe, with a shelf life of at least 2 years.
    Q
Why is storing and shipping concentrated nitric acid in ordinary HDPE bottles a bad idea?
    A
Ordinary HDPE is not rated for nitric acid because it permeates and weakens within a short time. When the acid is above 100ºF the corruption happens almost immediately. At around 120ºF, the reaction is immediate. By the time the bottle is showing any signs of yellowing, the bottle's integrity has already been compromised, and failure can be expected at any time. This makes using HDPE for concentrated nitric acid unsafe, and that is why ordinary HDPE is not approved by the US Department of Transportation for transporting nitric acid of any concentration.
    Q
    How
do Bausch bottles differ from common HDPE bottles?
    A
Bausch bottles may appear similar to common HDPE plastic bottles but are superior in every way. Unlike ordinary HDPE bottles, Bausch bottles are DOT-approved, do not yellow or degrade in contact with nitric acid, are 100% inert and do not interact with or contaminate the acid, will not break when dropped from a height of up to 10 feet, do not become brittle, will not develop cracks or leaks, and Bausch bottles keep you safe by keeping the acid where it belongs - in the bottle.
    Q
Why don't you ship with a stainless steel intermediate container, as required by DOT Regulations?
    A
Under 49 CFR, glass, or any other type of container MUST be placed inside a stainless steel can filled with vermiculite sufficient to absorb all of the acid in case of failure of the inner bottle during transit. This stainless can must then be packed inside a suitable 4GV carton for shipping. This is how your acid should be coming from anyone that does not have a DOT permit exempting the intermediate stainless steel can requirement. Bausch bottles have been specifically EXEMPTED from this requirement by the US Department of Transportation under a special permit and do not require the otherwise mandatory stainless steel intermediate container filled with vermiculite. This should give you an idea of just how safe and reliable these Bausch bottles are for
    shipping and keeping
    your nitric acid.
    Q
If keeping concentrated nitric acid in ordinary HDPE bottles is so bad then surely no one is doing it. Right?
    A
You'd think so, but unfortunately, we know of one seller offering concentrated nitric acid in ordinary HDPE bottles, and because doing so places buyers, carriers, and the public at risk, we are providing this information. Anyone storing and shipping concentrated nitric acid in ordinary HDPE bottles is doing it dangerously wrong, despite any claims to the contrary, but if it is also being shipped without the intermediate stainless steel can with vermiculite, then that's just an accident waiting to happen.
    Q
How can I tell if my nitric acid is coming in DOT-approved containers and packaging?
    A
Ordinary HDPE takes on a yellowish color when in contact with nitric acid. That's how you know. This color change indicates a breakdown of the molecular structure of the plastic, causing it to become weakened and brittle. Bausch bottles are safe, remain perfectly clear, and do not yellow. Any packaging actually approved by the US DOT will say so.
SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS, STORAGE (from MSDS)
Nitric acid is a strong acid and strong oxidizer. An oxidizer contributes oxygen to reactions, which can result in combustion or explosion.  Nitric acid reacts vigorously or violently with many combustible and flammable materials, including flammable organic solvents, bases, reducing agents, metals and metal compounds
    HANDLE WITH CARE
: Use extreme care when pouring Nitric Acid to avoid splashes or spills. Replace and tighten cap on container immediately to avoid accidental spills.  Have an abundant water supply handy to dilute any accidental spills. Cover open containers containing Nitric Acid with a cap, plug, or watch glass to avoid venting gases.
When using nitric acid, work under a fume hood cleared of incompatible materials not needed for your process. When diluting any concentrated acid, always add the acid to water slowly. NEVER ADD WATER TO CONCENTRATED ACID. Product should be used within 2 years of purchase
    AVOID INHALATION
    :
Nitric acid vapors and fumes are irritating to the respiratory system.
Inhalation of high concentrations of nitric acid vapor must be reported immediately. Delaying treatment can result in pulmonary edema and even death.
Do not open indoors except under a fume hood. Do not inhale fumes. Use a supplied-air respirator, such as an SCBA respirator at all times when working with Nitric Acid
    AVOID SKIN CONTACT
    :
Nitric acid can severely burn the eyes and skin.
Wear protective gloves resistant to Nitric Acid, such as heavy latex gloves. Wear an impervious apron or smock and long sleeves
    USE EYE PROTECTION
: Wear eye protection, such as polyethylene goggles or a polyethylene face shield to protect from splashing, it being advisable to wear both goggles and a face shield
    STORAGE
: Store nitric acid in the original container.  Dilute solutions must be stored in acid-resistant bottles, such as borosilicate glass with teflon caps. Polyethylene (PTFE) and standard HDPE are unsuitable for storing Nitric Acid.
DO NOT store nitric acid near incompatible materials with which it may react. These include acetic, chromic, and hydrocyanic acids, acetone, aniline, carbon, hydrogen sulfide, flammable materials, readily nitrated substances, organic solvents, bases, reducing agents, & metals and metal compounds.
Store nitric acid in its own storage cabinet near floor level whenever possible.
Otherwise, store nitric acid near floor level with inorganic acids, and segregated from other acids in a secondary containment vessel, such as a plastic bin, tub, or tote.
    Storage Temp. < 75ºF (<24ºC)
    DISPOSAL & SPILLS
: This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
If less than a few milliliters of concentrated acid or a few hundred milliliters of dilute acid is spilled, the spill can be neutralized by adding soda ash or sodium bicarbonate and rinsing profusely with water.
If the spill is large (i.e. greater than 1 liter of concentrated acid, or more than you have materials to handle), immediately evacuate the laboratory, close the doors, and promptly call 9-1-1
    FIRST AID
In case of accident, if you feel unwell seek medical advice immediately.
    Eyes
    - Get medical attention immediately and flush eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes
    Skin
    - Flush skin with plenty of water for 15 minutes
    Inhalation
    - Immediately move outside and get fresh air. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. Immediately call a poison control center or medical doctor for treatment advice. Sip water if able to swallow. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed to do so by a poison control center or medical doctor
