Dimethylglyoxime is a well known reagent in analytical chemistry. It is used for the qualitative and quantitative determination of nickel by gravimetric analysis. It also finds application in the separation of palladium from tin, gold, rhodium and iridium. It is also useful in the detection of bismuth. Dimethylglyoxime, is used as a chelating agent which forms complexes with metals such as copper, nickel, and palladium. Dimethylglyoxime reacts with a nickel salt in a green solution to generate a red colored insoluble tetradentate coordinate complex of nickel. It is used as a reagent for the colorimetric determination of urea and ureido compounds.
