Description
P-Tolunitrile is encountered as a partially frozen yellow liquid at room temperature. Gentle heating in a water bath will quickly melt the substance. Nitriles can undergo a variety of reactions. A Grignard reagent will attack the electrophilic carbon of the nitrile which leads to an imine intermediate. This imine can then be hydrolyzed into a ketone. Nitriles can also be reduced to primary amines, heated with an acid to form a carboxylic acid, and be used as ligands in transition metal complexes. This substance is combustible and will release poisonous gasses if ignited. It has been shown to cause directed damage to the respiratory tract when inhaled. P-Tolunitrile is a mild skin and eye irritant. There is evidence that p-Tolunitrile is carcinogenic.Consult the MSDS for proper PPE, and for proper firefighting measures prior to handling the substance. For Laboratory use only. No liability accepted for accidents in handling or use.
