Potassium permanganate is widely used in chemical
industry and labs as a strong oxidizing agent, and also as a medicine for dermititis, for cleaning wounds, and general disinfection. Almost all applications of potassium permanganate exploit its oxidizing properties.   As a strong oxidant that does not generate toxic byproducts, KMnO

Potassium permanganate is used extensively in the water treatment industry.
Potassium permanganate is sometimes included in survival kits: as a hypergolic fire starter (when mixed with glycerol antifreeze from a car radiator; as a water sterilizer - and for creating distress signals on snow as it dyes the snow a bright purple color.
Wear gloves when handling.  This will stain your hands, and everything else purple.  This is an oxidizer, so keep it away from fuel sources.
In agricultural chemistry, it is used for estimation of available nitrogen in soil.
