STAPLEX S-54 HL Heavy Duty Commercial Electric Stapler. Rare Model. One of The 1st Made By Staplex 1950.Wow, what a find in this condition. Built like a Sherman tank and works like a beast.
Excellent, clean working condition. A super rare model S-54 "HL", which means it has the extra Hi-Lo switch which gives it the extra womp to staple up to 40 sheets as advertised by Staplex. It is listed in the "Early Office" Museum, where you can learn that Staplex began making staplers in 1949, marketing the S-54 and S-56 in 1950. So....it is one of if not the first stapler marketed by this company. I have not been able to find another "HL" version of this stapler and I have had this thing for over 2 years.
The rubber feet are still in very good condition. Even the pad, where the brass hammer hits the top of the 61HS stapler feels very much still usable and indicates that this one was not used as much as you would expect.
When I bought this I didn't realize it wasn't working until I got it home. I figured out someone had installed the primary stapler incorrectly. What was even worse is that someone had installed the staples over top of the spring loaded slide, so it was all jammed up something serious. My guess is that it was in such great condition that all of this bungling must have happened early in it's life, someone couldn't figure out how to fix it and so decades later it wound up in a thrift store for me to find. The hammering part of the stapler worked fine from the git-go.
Trust me when I say I spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to fix it. In the course of un-jamming the stapler, a metal "T" shaped piece came out of the stapler. Now having unjammed the stapler, I had the problem of figuring out where that piece went that would allow it to finally work properly, I even contemplated junking it though I really didn't want to. After about an hour and a half and a few beers, a light went off in my head, I thought I had finally figured out where that part went, and it did so perfectly, snapping in to place securely (it will never come out again unless you make it do so). Laughing like a mad scientist, I yelled "I want to see it work", where as my wife must have thought me crazy. Gathering up the few usable staples, I loaded a few staples, installed the stapler, flipped the switch, slipped a few pieces of paper against the trigger and "BAM". I admit it almost scared me but this thing did exactly what it is supposed to do, staple things, and with a vengeance.
After all said, this stapler works as well as it did before someone unintentionally decommissioned it so many years ago. It is a staple breathing beast. They just don't make things this well built any more.
Yes, staples are still easily found for this model. LL or long leg staples are .28 inch in length. I suppose you could use a .25, but not certain.
It will be double boxed for safe shipping, shipping weight will be somewhere between 12-13lbs.
